Journal #1
Many young people want to be older for several reasons. One reason is because older people have more freedom. Older people can go anywhere they want without having a curfew or people telling them what to do. They have the privilege to drive and vote. Being older allows people to be independent like having their own house. Many older people also want to be younger. Youngsters have to the advantage of not worrying about paying for bills or working. Younger people also have less responsibility than older people. Everyone should take advantage of being young because you are only young once.

Purpose of Myth Review
1. Four fundamental questions that myths address are "What is the nature of the universe in which I live in?", "How can I balance my own desires with my responsibilities to my community?", "How can I reconcile myself to the inevitably of death?", and "How much control do I have over my own life?".
2. Four themes in world mythology are that the first parents are often the gods of sky and earth, the gods destroy at least one world of mortals by causing great floods, heroes are children of gods who have an unusual birth, posses extraordinary strength, kill monsters with special weapons, embark on an arduous journey, descend into the underworld as part of their task, have an unusual death, and lastly in the world as in nature, birth, maturity, and death are followed by rebirth.
3. Most of the major cultures start with the beginning of the universe as a chaotic, formless mass that a god or pair of gods separate. The gods multiply so that each can have his or her particular role in the universal scheme, and the creator-god brings life to earth in the form of plants, animals, and humans.
4. Hero myths and epics teach members of society the appropriate attitudes, behavior, and values of that culture.
5. Ordinary people identify with heroes by performing deeds that help their community, and they inspire others to emulate them.
6. The foundation of the Matriarchal Society was based on agriculture.
7. Sigmund Freud and his followers view myths as the expression of the individual's unconscious wishes, fears, and drives.
8. Myths demonstrate that people possess the intellectual capacity to understand the world in which they live.

Birth Order Essay
Lupita Aranda

Period 2

Period 2
Can Birth Order Define Who You
Are?
"Being
in a family is like being in a play. Each birth order position is like a
different part in a play, with distinct and separate characteristics for each
part. Therefore, if one sibling has already filled a part, such as the good child,
other siblings may feel they have to find other parts to play, such as
rebellious child, academic child, athletic child, social child, and so on.”
This statement from Jane Nelson explains that each child is different and
unique in their own way. Birth order can influence the traits of each child and
their personality. For example, I play the role of the middle child in my
family. Birth order defines some of my traits, but not all of them. According
to some researchers, the middle child can have contradictory characteristics,
but may have a better chance to succeed in the future.
The
middle child’s personality is very different to the personality of the oldest
child. For example, my brother and I are the exact opposite when it comes to
personality wise. My brother is more sociable and easier to get along with. I am
a little more shy and it takes time for people to get to know me well. I am
actually starting to become more sociable than I was before, which is good
because I want to meet new people and have more friends. Another example, is
that I am more independent and get embarrassed more than my brother. I am
independent, but it usually depends. I like being alone in my room because it
gives me time to relax and think. Although, I do like doing group projects
because I like getting ideas from other people and interacting with them. I do
get embarrassed, but not as much as I used to when I was younger. Being the
center of attention causes me to get embarrassed because it makes me feel
self-conscious. In contrary, my brother doesn’t care if he gets embarrassed,
and he isn’t really independent. He likes to be around people all the time. I
would say that the research about the middle child’s personality compared to
the oldest is pretty accurate.
Researchers
say that the middle child tends to feel “left out”. I would defiantly not agree
with this statement because I have never felt left out. My sister and I are
usually the ones who go out with my family and spend time with them the most.
For example, if my parents go shopping, my sister and I usually go except for
my older brothers. I love spending time with my family because they always make
me laugh. Another evidence I don’t agree with is that the middle child has very
few pictures of their family. I have two photo albums and a huge box containing
very old pictures. Pictures are very valuable to me because they bring back
memories of enjoyable times and relatives who have passed away. I love to look
through the photos once in a while because it makes me laugh of how my mom
dressed me and how she used to do my hair. I have always been involved and
close to my family. In addition, I have many pictures of my family.
Typical
middle children are usually interested in careers involving negotiation,
compromise, being managers, and leaders according to research. On the other
hand, I’m more interested in careers involving sports and health related jobs.
Subjects that interest me are sports medicine, kinesiology, and the medical
field. I would like to become an athletic trainer or a physical therapist one
day. Being a radiologic technologist is another option I might pursue.
In
addition, researchers believe that middle children have good relationships with
people. I strongly agree with this statement for several reasons. Having a
positive relationship allows people to trust, respect, and be loyal with each
other. For example, I have a very good relationship with my Mom. Whenever I
have a problem or concern, I can always look up to her for advice. In my ups
and downs, my mom is always by my side, which allows me to trust her. Also, she
always supports me in everything I do, such as taking me to my soccer
tournaments. I believe having a positive relationship with people will have a
positive effect in the future.
In conclusion, this research provides some traits that were accurate for me, but some were also inaccurate. An example that was very accurate for me is having the exact opposite personality compared to my oldest sibling. On the other hand, a career involving negotiation and compromise is inaccurate for me. I am actually interested in careers involving sports and health related jobs. The birth order research changed my views and perceptions. My birth order has given me a different options of some careers I should pursue. This has also given me advice, such as trying to be more outgoing and easier to get along. The birth order research has changed my view of the middle child because I viewed them as having similar traits to their siblings. This has made me realize the every individual has a different personality, traits, and interests. What’s very fascinating is that middle children in different families can have very similar traits. Anyway, I thought the birth order research is somewhat accurate in defining my personality and traits.

Birth Order Traits
What Research Says Evidence Showing Accuracy or Inaccuracy
independent, negotiator embarrassed ,misunderstood, secretive | I am sometimes independent, but it usually depends. For example, I sometimes like doing group projects because I like getting ideas from other people and working with people. I do get embarrassed, but I don't get embarrassed as much as I used when I was younger. I am also not very secretive. I don't like to conceal my problems or feeling, I rather talk to people about them rather than have them buried inside me. |
Feels "left out" Has very few pictures of family | I disagree with both of these statements. I have never felt left out. I am usually the one who goes out with my family and spends time with them. I actually have like two photo albums of my family. I like looking through it because brings back memories and funny moments. |
Careers involving being managers, leaders, compromise, and negotiation | I am not interested into careers involving negotiation, compromise, and being a leader. I'm more interested into sports and health related jobs, such as sports medicine. I would like to be a sports trainer or a physical therapist. |
Personality opposite to first born child | This information sort of describes my brother and I. He's more sociable than I am, but I'm starting to be more sociable now. He's easier to get along with while it takes time for people to get to know me. |
Avoids conflict and has many friends | Avoids conflicts really describes me because I don't like having problems with my friends or other people. I rather give advice to people with problems. I do have friends but many as in popular. I have a pretty decent amount of friends. |
Out of place Willing to "give in" | I don't usually feel out of place, unless I'm with people I don't really know. I am sometimes willing to give in. I will only give in if the decision benefits me. If someone offers me drugs, I will not give in. It usually depends on the situation if I give in or not. |

Reflections On Week 1
1. The factor that I think will most affect my participation and experience in this class is my schedule. Since I will have history, math, Spanish, chemistry all at the same time, I will have a limited time schedule to get all my homework done and keep up with my classes. In addition, I have soccer practice every Tuesday and Thursday. Practice takes away about three hours of my time, so I always try to get some homework done before, but I usually don't get a lot done. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the days I am busy the most and end up staying up till one or two in the morning trying to get my homework done. I am not very good in using my time wisely, so that will not benefit me at all. Even though I know I have tons of homework, I waste time using my phone or messing around. Using my time wisely is one aspect I will have to improve.
2. I don't really have an awesome learning experience, but I did learn some attributes that have helped me. In sixth grade at Ontiveros elementary school, I had a teacher that really helped me improve in English. Some aspects that I improved on was my way of writing, vocabulary, comprehension skills, and speaking in front of people. She not only taught well, but she also developed my confidence. When she placed me in an advanced class, I thought I wasn't smart enough to be in that class. She made me realize that I am smart and that by working hard would help me pass the class. I always paid attention to her because she would give out useful information on how to succeed in school.
3. I am most excited about being challenged. Being challenged will help me grow in English and make me realize that I can keep up in advanced classes. I look forward to learning how to improve my writing and speaking in front of others. On the other hand, I am most concerned about the amount of homework and the timed essays. The amount of homework worries me because I don't know if I will have enough time to complete it as a result of having five other classes. Another concern is the timed essays because I don't do well under a limited amount of time and pressure. When I am under pressure, I get really nervous and anxious which doesn't allow me to think. Working under pressure will benefit me by working more efficiently and maintaining self control.
